''The Pregnancy' is an interplay between nature, human existence, and the cycle of life. In this sculpture, the center figure is the kneeling pregnant woman, her head resting on her belly. The male figure is wrapped tightly behind and around her with his ear pressed to her womb.both listening to the unborn child. There are many elements in the piece that are open to interpretation: The expressions of sorrow in the faces, a seemingly dead tree's last two leaves cradling the human womb, the sharp branch piercing the males's neck, and the barren field on which they stand. All of which are intended to emphasize the ambiguity regarding who or what is in control of the life cycle. Further interpretation may bring a discussion on gender issues and the roles each sex play in society and the natural world. In this piece, it's the woman who is acting as an extension of nature's forces. This reality is most evident in the lower right panel where her hand aids in lifting the male over her while her foot keeps him grounded to the over-tilled soil. In today's world, it is more often said that the male is in control, that our patriarchal society is defined by (and evident in) the 'power jobs' or authority positions most often filled by men. This cannot be denied, but is in my opinion a wholely superficial observation. We, both men and woman, are simply behaving the way nature has designed us to behave. And men, as depicted in this piece, may be as powerless as woman...regardless of their positions in society. Click for large image |
